Abstract:

Oily sludge from gas processing facilities contains components that are major environmental pollutants. Biodegradation is an alternative treatment, but can be affected by other components of the sludge, such as SULPHUR compounds, so it is important to evaluate the effect of these on oil biodegradation in order to prevent negative impacts. This work studied the transformation of SULPHUR compounds in oily sludge biodegradation systems at the microcosm level. The predominant SULPHUR compounds in the original sludge were ELEMENTAL SULPHUR and pyrite (9,776 and 28,705.4 mg kg-1, respectively). In the biodegradability assays, hydrocarbon concentrations decreased from 312,705.6 to 186, 760.3 mg kg-1 after 15 days of treatment. After this time, hydrocarbon degrading activity stopped, corresponding with a decrease in hydrocarbon degrading bacteria. These changes were related to a reduction in pH that inhibits biodegradation. During the assay, SULPHUR compounds were gradually oxidized and transformed. The concentration of sulphate increased from 5,096 to 64,868.3 mg kg-1 after 30 days in the assay, although controls were unchanged. Therefore, it is important to determine changes to the main compounds of the waste in order to assess their impact.

Abstract:

Flotation and leaching methods were used to remove ash and SULPHUR from bitumen by sulfuric acid. The bitumen samples had SULPHUR content of 9.6% (6.74% in the pyrite SULPHUR form) and 30% ash. All the experiments were done under aeration rate of 4L/min using pine oil and gasoline as frother and collector agents, respectively. The factors studied were including the amounts of collector and frother agents, pH, and the solid weight percentage in the pulp, stirrer speed, and particle size. The bitumen samples with dimensions less than 0.5 mm were crushed. The flotation experiments were performed in a 3-liter Denver laboratory flotation cell to ease the ash and SULPHUR removal. The optimum condistion obtaind from the results were; foaming amount of 50gr/t, collector amount of 1kg/t, impeller speed of 1200rpm, pH=7, pulp containing 5% of solid, particle size of 100mesh, and flotation time of 3 mins. In these circumstances, 52.9% of pyrite SULPHUR (e.g.; 36.45% of total SULPHUR) and 43% of ash were removed. With the approach of leaching with sulfuric acid, the organic and pyrite SULPHUR removal were 7% and 13%, repectively. Combination of these two methods (in optimal conditions), removed up 47% of the total SULPHUR and 61% of ash through bitumen sample.

Abstract:

In this research paper, the increase of SULPHUR trioxide formation (SO3) is studied during its combustion in a mixture of n-pentane with air which contains various percentages of SULPHUR dioxide (2.5-20%), in ratio of n-pantane. The simulation of its kinetic with computer, facilitates the study of the hypothesis precision, for a mixture of a low quantities of SULPHUR dioxide.

Abstract:

SULPHUR Mustard is a potent chemical warfare agent that was widely used during First World War and Iran- Iraq conflict. Over 100,000 Iranians were injured by SULPHUR mustard and one-third is of them were suffering from late effects until today. This vesicant agent has a lot of acute and chronic destructive effects on the skin, eye and respiratory system. SULPHUR mustard via the alkylation of several cellular proteins (structural, cytoplasmic and enzymes) and cell nuclei, produce several toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on epidermis, dermis, dermal appendages and hypodermis. We report a 41-year-old man who was poisoned with SULPHUR mustard in 1988.After exposure he developed severe skin blisters on upper trunk, posterior aspect of both hands and genitalia along with ocular and respiratory complications. He also had atrophy, pigmentation and vascular changes on skin of penis with pigmentation, atrophy and related findings in histopathologic studies, so the diagnosis of "SULPHUR mustard induced poikiloderma" was postulated. The absence of any complication on palm.s. despite of their recurrent exposure to SULPHUR mustard is another remarkable finding in this case. It has been suggested that palm.s. can act as a transport vector of SULPHUR mustard to other sites of skin.

Abstract:

The principal objective of this study was to explore the compatibility of a blend of two synthetic elastomers viz., ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) and chlorobutyl rubber (CIIR). Various commercial grades of EPDM were blended with a specific grade of CIIR at different proportions. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear strength, ageing resistance, etc. were studied. On the basis of the observed physical properties, two particular grades of EPDM were found to be compatible with CIIR. Differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the results. Chlorosulphonated polyethylene was added as a compatibilizing agent to overcome the phase separation of the other two incompatible grades of EPDM in blending with CIIR. The results revealed that the addition of compatibilizer greatly improves the compatibility and thereby the properties of the blends.
